Hair Plugs Guide
74This is the place to learn all about hair plugs and what the new technology is. Hair plugs were first used back in the 1950's to treat male patten baldness. The idea was if a person could have groups of hair placed into his bald scalp then maybe the hair would grow and cover the bald spot. The question was whether the hair would respond to the bald patch by acting like the hair from that spot and fall out or if the hair would respond as it had in the section it was removed from.
It was found that the hair plugs when revoved from an area of growing hair would continue to grow when transplanted into the bald area. This was good news for people with baldness. The groups of hair follicals were removed from a section of the scalp with plenty of hair and then the grouping was inserted into a slit in the scalp. The removed scalp portion left a hole to be filled and this was usually done with sutures that were then covered up by the existing hair.
The teccnology at that time left a lot to be desired though as micro surgery was not being practiced. Currently groups of one to three hair follicals are removed and then reinserted in the scalp. The surgeon is able to place the hair in a very natural looking way. He or she is able to insert the hair shafts so that the hair tends to lay in the same direction as the natural hair.
The crude techniques of the 1950's to 1990's resulted in hair plugs that looked like cheap dolls hair. Groups of hair sticking up in all directions with bald spots in between. The results were very noticable and actually looked worse than the bald spot they were meant to replace. It wasn't until 1995 that a new micro-grafting technique was perfected that allowed the hair to look natural.
In the micro grafting technique the hair is removed in groups or one to three follicals. This is the natural number of hair groupings found in scalps. Next a technician takes the grouping and removes all the unnecessary parts left at the root of the grouping such as fat and excess skin. This work is done under a microscope. Once the hair is prepared it is then delivered to the surgeon who inserts the groups into prepared slices in the scalp. Most of the time hair falls out for the first six months but then when it grows back in it is narual looking and fills the area nicely.
Within several months the hair plug recipient has a full head of hair again which may last several years.
Hair plugs or hair micro-implants as they are called now are great for getting hair growing back on the bald spot. The hair is yours so it looks natural and a good surgeon can insert the hair in a way that causes it to lay in the same direction as the surrounding hair shafts thus making if very attractive.
